Etropole was founded as a Thracian settlement. In VII-VI century B.C. it was a centre of ore output and metal-work.
The Thracian tribe, which inhabited the region, was called the Tribals. They discovered clay utensils and ornaments prove the high social level of the local population.

During the First and the Second Bulgarian Kingdom Etropole used to supply the country with iron, copper and gold.
During XV-XVII century the town was a centre of ore output and metal-work.
During the Bulgarian National Revival, with its 42 crafts, the town transformed into an important crafts centre.
The citizens took an important part in the struggle for national liberation. They joined heroically the Russian-Turkish liberation war and later - the Serbian-Bulgarian, the Balkan, the First and the Second World Wars.
