| ETROPOLE - CULTURE |
The monastery of Etropole “St. Troitza” is situated 5 km. east from the town. It was founded in XII century. During XVI-XVII century the literary school came into being and gradually it transformed into a significant centre of the enlightenment in Bulgaria.

The Etropole’s manuscripts /more than 76 volumes, distributed throughout Bulgaria, reaching even the Aton Monasteries/ were skillfully formed as books, with calligrapher letters and special book-covers by wood and calf-skin. An icon-painting studio also existed in the monastery - where many icons from that period are still kept.
The contribution of the monastery for the keeping of the Bulgarian nationality and language during the Ottoman rule was exclusive. In XIX century the abbot of the monastery Chrisant took part in the national liberation struggle. The hiding-place of Levski is also preserved here.
