| HISTORY OF VARSHETS |
Varshets comes into being around the mineral springs and its history is connected with the balneotherapy. The oldest record for its existence dates back to VI century in the Byzantine chronicles with the name of the stronghold MEDEKA /Medikus - curative/, the only settlement with such name in the Roman Empire. The name had obviously existed before that, going by the objects found in the Roman period - I-III century.

| In the area “Kaleto”, where the ruins of the ancient stronghold still exist, medical and pharmaceutic instruments have been found. It is supposed that these instruments belonged to a medical officer, because military units were billeting there to protect the roads to Serdika /Sofia/, Bononia etc.
| Another interesting find is the calcareous “ARA” with a dedication inscription of a Roman citizen who was recovered with the mineral water of “Vreshtets” /the ancient name of Varshets - in translation: hot, boiling water/.
| Pipes and small hexagonal tiles of a mineral pool, a lead pipe with a Latin inscription and other objects were found during excavations for the building of the baths. They show the ancient traditions of curing with the mineral water in Varshets. The sculpture composition of Telesfor /a Thracian divinity/ - “the boy-god” was also found in the town. It is the symbol of Varshets - the town of health.
